R&P Post 55: Editing Update!

Hiya and welcome back to another research and planning post!

We have now started to edit our music video through colour correction. For this we downloaded a cinematic packaging named Mlut. We downloaded this colour correction programme from an online software called Motion FX which has many colour correction packages. By using this particular software, rather than just simply using the colour correction packages on final cut pro, this will make our music video of much higher quality. Mlut also supports Final Cut Pro, meaning that it has been easy for us to use on Final Cut Pro for which we have used the basics of editing.

Once we had downloaded Mlut we then used it to edit our music video on Final Cut Pro. In this iage you are able to see all of the main colour grading packages from Mlut:

For our music video, we have mainly used the 'Cold War' and 'Frontier' packages as these are the ones which most suit the colours of our music video. In order to emphasise the colours of this colour grading we turned down the opacity, thus increasing the strength of the colour correction.

This image shows the result of adding the 'Frontier' package to one of our performance shots:

The result of adding this colour grading here gave this shot colder tones, using more blues. Consequently, this shot now looks more cinematic as these tones are very popular in cinematic colour grading.

As well as 'Frontier', we also used 'Cold War':

This made the sky in the background of this shot much more blue, rather than grey as it looked prior to the use of this colour grading.

We also used the 'Cold War' setting for the shots of Kati running towards the camera:

This 'Cold War' preset gives the colours more detail which then improves the quality of the shot as a whole.

A slightly more challenging scene to colour correct was the 'Mafia' scene, also known as the fourth 'level' of our music video. The colours were particularly difficult to correct and grade in this shot because of the location in which we filmed in ('Sainsbury's' car park). The lighting at this location was rather bad, with it being largely over-exposed. So when it came to editing, we had quite a lot to work with for this scene. Firstly, we used the colour board on Final Cut Pro to change the lighting and tones that this piece of footage has, as well as using the colour presets from Mlut a lot in order to emphasise the cinematic aesthetic. This is the result:

So far that is all the editing we have completed! We have learnt that colour correction is a very important part of the editing process and that it significantly improves the quality of footage. In order to push this quality even further, we downloaded a specific software (Mlut) which has higher quality colour grading packages than Final Cut Pro, meaning that our music video will be of a very high standard.
